Odoo Hosting and Editions: Questions Before Choosing

A decision sheet separates Odoo edition, release and hosting, connecting customization, operations and migration to evidence and ownership.

“We want Enterprise in the cloud” may sound decisive while product edition, version number and hosting remain confused. An implementer might demonstrate customization in a different environment from the one being purchased. Separate the decisions to understand the recommendation and the evidence behind it.

Start with requirements, operational ownership and the organization's ability to manage change rather than a hosting name. An Odoo provider should connect each option to evidence, limits and attributable operating costs, without treating a demonstration feature as proof of your entitlement.

Three axes on one sheet

Odoo's comparison page identifies Community and Enterprise editions. A version number identifies a software release, while hosting determines where and how it runs. Clarify the intended meaning of “version” and avoid assuming an edition selection resolves management, backup and customization details.

Axis Specify The name alone cannot establish
Product edition Edition, plan, required entitlements and references Every application, support service or customization in the provider's offer
Release number Actual version, add-on compatibility and intended transition Direct migration of any database to any environment
Hosting Online, Odoo.sh or self-hosting and responsibilities Automatic inclusion of every backup, update or repair

Add entitlement-review dates and the confirming party. This discussion tool does not exhaust plan features. Verify required items against sources and the actual proposal instead of relying on application lists that omit operational requirements or contractual boundaries.

Start with one customization

Imagine a fictional event-equipment company needing a reference field, internal approval and a proposed external Python connector. These needs do not necessarily require the same solution. Ask how each will be fulfilled in the proposed environment and what requires configuration, tooling or an added module.

Importable-module documentation distinguishes restricted custom Python deployment on the described managed hosting from other customization through Studio or XML data files within limits. Avoid simplifying this to “Online prohibits all customization” or changing hosting before identifying actual code requirements and tool entitlements.

The reference field and connector may follow different paths. Request evidence of saving, approval and external-system unavailability if integration is included. A modified screen does not establish connector operation or organizational licensing for the tools used.

Who carries operational work?

Assign backups, restoration requests and tests, updates, monitoring, access management and application-versus-infrastructure incident handling. Separate platform responsibilities, purchased implementer services and internal staff work. These require explicit statements rather than automatic inferences from the table.

For self-hosting, define required skills, resources and documentation. For managed operation, define access boundaries and request procedures for actions unavailable directly to your team. “Cloud” cannot describe every arrangement identically or promise removal of all organizational responsibility.

Ask about migration before needing it

Hosting-change documentation describes version and add-on compatibility conditions, including intermediary Online versions that cannot move directly to the described environments without the appropriate path. This is not an instruction to migrate now; request an inventory, compatibility plan and database-specific trial if transition becomes necessary.

Ask what materials enable exit, who provides them and what could prevent it. Connect the answer to the actual version, files, add-ons, data and downtime boundaries. “You can change later” cannot replace an explanation of dependencies on another party, release or previous customization.

Record the reason behind the decision

Complete the sheet with the need, evidence, chosen option, accepted limit and follow-up owner. The configuration and customization guide addresses individual requirements, while the Odoo upgrade inventory covers add-on compatibility. Use the sheet when discussing Odoo implementation with Nextwave to establish requirements, a suitable environment and reasons for choosing it.
